Prof. Lawrence (Larry) Conyers

Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR)

Prof. Lawrence (Larry) Conyers is a leading world expert in ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for archaeology. He is a professor at the University of Denver (Department of Anthropology), Colorado, USA and has been the principal investigator of projects in Australia and worldwide. Larry led the GPR investigations at the Mapoon Mission Cemetery and continues to partner with Virtus Heritage, serving as a key advisor for GPR projects and providing peer review of all GPR project outputs. 

Prof. Conyers is the author of multiple books on GPR, including the 2013 publication Ground Penetrating Radar for Archaeology 3rd Edition (Rowman and Littlefield Publishers, Alta Mira Press, Latham, Maryland) and the 2012 publication Interpreting Ground Penetrating Radar for Archaeology (Left Coast Press, Walnut Creek, California). Prof. Conyers is also well-published in reputable archaeological, geophysical and engineering, and geo-archaeological journals and editorials.

Emma St Pierre

Dr Emma St Pierre

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

Dr Emma St Pierre has a PhD in Archaeological Science from the University of Queensland and nearly two decades of experience as an archaeologist and heritage practitioner, working on projects in Australia (NSW, WA, QLD, Tasmania), New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and East Timor. Emma is based in Dunedin, New Zealand and specialises in providing ground-penetrating radar (GPR) services for archaeological projects. Emma works closely with GPR world expert Prof. Lawrence Conyers.  

Emma has extensive experience in NSW undertaking Aboriginal cultural heritage assessments, including Aboriginal community consultation, management of large-scale excavation and survey programs, detailed site recording, artefact analysis and production of assessment reports and management plans. Emma is a Full Member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc. She is also an approved provider for Section 10 reporting under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984. 

Dr Peter Mitchell OAM

Environmental Assessment and Management and Landscape Interpretation

Peter was the Head of the Department of Physical Geography at Macquarie University, where he taught Earth Sciences and Environmental Management. After retiring, he was an Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury (NZ), presented units in Soil Management and River Restoration for NSW TAFE – a series of landscape interpretation short courses for archaeologists in Sydney and Melbourne, and led conservation field courses for International Student Volunteers.  

Peter has more than four decades of consulting experience in environmental assessment and landscape interpretation for archaeologists, developers and government agencies. He has been a member of several advisory panels, including a Scientific Advisory Panel for Manly Council, Heritage Advisory Council for Ryde City, Biodiversity and Green Corridors subcommittee for the NSW Environmental Trust, and the National Geotourism Strategy Committee. 

He is the author of some 65 scientific publications in geomorphology and soil science and over 150 contracted reports. He has a keen interest in coastal and arid zone environments.
