At Virtus Heritage, we offer a comprehensive approach to heritage projects. We combine archaeological expertise with Aboriginal consultation, oral history shared by Elders, and archival research, enabling us to create ethical and practical solutions that align with statutory requirements, client objectives, and community expectations.
Virtus Heritage consultants specialise in Aboriginal heritage and impact assessments. Our capabilities in this space are strengthened through the excellent relationships we maintain with the Aboriginal communities we work with, particularly in the Hunter Valley, Newcastle and North Coast NSW.
We regularly partner with Aboriginal communities to undertake community projects, and our staff have experience conducting Aboriginal Heritage studies in QLD, NSW and WA.
Virtus Heritage is pre-qualified as a provider of Indigenous Heritage services to the Australian Department of Defence as part of the Defence Infrastructure Panel – Environment, Heritage and Estate Engineering Services 2020-2025 (DIP.EHE).
This Panel Agreement allows our team to assist Defence with cultural heritage assessment, management and conservation while maintaining operational and strategic capabilities.
Our expertise extends to built heritage, including historical buildings, landscapes, and remains tied to various aspects of history. We excel in delivering Heritage Assessment and Statement of Heritage Impact reports, often required for proposed changes to historic properties.
Through archival recording, we create enduring records of historically significant places and objects, supporting cultural heritage preservation.
Additionally, our teams utilise Geographic Information Systems (GIS), oral histories and historical research for cultural mapping projects with Aboriginal communities, identifying and conserving culturally significant areas.
Our teams regularly undertake comprehensive cultural mapping projects with Aboriginal communities using our Geographic Information Systems (GIS) capabilities. Cultural mapping is a term used to describe the spatial representation of tangible (objects, sites and material culture) and intangible (stories, knowledge and memories) Indigenous cultural heritage.
We believe a true cultural value mapping exercise is a partnership with Aboriginal communities on Country. This process assesses areas of cultural significance and provides guidance to support decision making for the preservation and conservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage.
We specialise in developing Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs) through close collaboration with communities, setting high standards of professional excellence in Australia. These plans are vital agreements for safeguarding Aboriginal cultural heritage in project management. At Virtus Heritage, we are committed to preserving and promoting cultural heritage values and sites through our interdisciplinary approach.
If you’d like to work with us or need guidance on how our archaeology and cultural heritage services can support a project you have in mind, let’s start a conversation.
Virtus Heritage is committed to the spirit of reconciliation and acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and the Traditional Custodians of the states and territories of Australia. We recognise the Traditional Owners of the lands we work within. We pay our respect to Elders past, present and emerging in maintaining the culture, country and their spiritual and historical connections to the lands and waters.
